Private pool

Private pools are a world of their own. Day to day stress can be left behind and exchanged for some relaxation and refreshing exercise. Hence it makes sense to emphasise the uniqueness of this space for retreat. Our design for the pool in a freestanding house reinterprets the front side of the inner walls as outer walls! The depiction of the building along the side wall is connected, in its perspective, to the front side, to the effect that the observer can’t identify any corners of the room. The ceiling is partially interpreted as sky, partially as a view of the roof from below. Again, it becomes very hard for the observing eye to differentiate between the different corners and there are several perspective ambiguities.

The painting of the room followed after discussing several different blueprints, whilst our clients were away on holiday. The primer was an abrasion resistant dispersion colour; additionally, there is surface protection through the form of acrylic transparent varnish, which also serves as a UV blocker. The first words of the client’s children upon arrival at the newly painted pool were: “Dad, the pool has suddenly become a lot larger!”
