Grey painting (Grisaille)
Content
3-day workshop on theory, blending practise, systematic studies and sketches. Each attender cre-ates 3-4 fascinating design samples:
1. red–yellow marble with an elaborate trim
2. sandstone mask
3. capital of a column or another item of faux architecture
Workshop description
Grey painting displays light and shadow in an expressive way. Just using shades of light and dark
creates incredible relief work and spatial depth. The painted objects appear to rise up from the sur-face beneath them. The 3-4 design samples created by each participant show this effect in an im-pressive manner.
The samples are carried out in various techniques with artist acrylic paints respectively emulsion paints:
- The red-yellow marble trim is painted in a glazing technique, appearing to emerge from the mar-ble surface. The students learn, how one and the same trim due to its position in space (above or below, right or left) is achieved.
- A good feeling for form is demanded when painting the sandstone mask. You are practicing to imagine the relief shape of the mask, pointing out which parts are nearer and which parts are fur-ther away from the viewer. Ursula Benad supplies you with patterns for painting, so that any stu-dent will accomplish with this demanding exercise.
- The third motif is concerned with a striking effect when viewed from the distance.
All materials and tools are provided on the course. You are not required to bring any tools with you. It is recommended that you bring light work clothing (overall, apron) to protect you from any paint spray.
